Quilt Design with Mirrors - I'm Obsessed

Have you ever drawn quilting designs using a mirror?  I'm obsessed with this technique, especially for whole cloth quilts.

I saw some videos by Sharon Schamber where she described the technique, once you get the concept, it's easy to do...

  1. Fold a square piece of paper in half to make a triangle.
  2. Mark the center and the outside center.
  3. Draw your design
  4. Look at it in the mirrors and make adjustments.
  5. Scan, enlarge, copy, etc, and you have a quilting design that is balanced, and even on all sides.
This is REALLY oversimplified, but you get the idea.

By drawing only part of the pattern, then using mirrors to show what the whole quilt would look like, you are looking at 8 identical parts of the design, and everything is the same in each section.

See Sharon Schamber's YouTube videos or the Designing for the Quilting Process workshop on her web page for more detailed instructions.  I also saw Designing for the Quilting Process when it was on The Quilt Show for a short time, but it's no longer available :(
