Wedding Dress Quilt for Deb

Deb had a beautiful wedding dress with a ruffled skirt, lots of embellishments on the bodice, pearls draped across the back, and a large bow.

The top of the quilt is the satin lining of her dress. I incorporated the lace and beading into the quilting design, and put two layers of ruffles on the outer border.  The bow fit perfectly at the bottom of the quilt.

Deb asked me to add some teal color to the design, so I stitched the feathers on the inner border in teal thread. The finished quilt is 44" x 52".  I use wool batting, which quilts well and resists creasing.

Wedding Dress Quilt for Lisette

Lisette asked for a quilted wall hanging made from the fabric in her dress, and the fabric from her bridesmaid's dress. Her wedding colors were purple and sage green.

This design shows off the purple fabric, and the feather quilting, and one of the borders was quilted in purple, with a green background quilting.

Wedding Dress Quilt for Dorothy

Dorothy's wedding dress had beautiful lace on the yoke, sleeves and around the bottom of the dress. which I was able to incorporate into the quilt design.  She also asked me to use the headpiece she wore in her wedding.

The quilting design in the quilt is more free form, with a background on the border of straight lines 1/2 inch apart.

Wedding Dress Bodice Quilt for Pam

Pam's dress had a beautiful bodice, so we decided to incorporate the bodice as a focal point of the quilt.  The bodice was partially deconstructed and attached to the quilt, with fancy feathers and hearts used in the quilting design.

Some dresses have discoloration that cannot be removed, but that doesn't mean they can't be made into beautiful quilts.  The slight discoloration on Pam's bodice provides a nice contrast and makes it show up better on the quilt.

Wedding Dress Quilt for Jenna

Jenna had a beautiful wedding dress, with a big tulle skirt.  She wanted a quilt with a ruffle, and a feather quilting design.  She also wanted some of the flowers from the bodice incorporated into the design.

The top of the quilt was made from the satin underneath all that tulle!  I used the sash and bow from the dress around the center, and the outer border of the quilt was also covered with the tulle.  Then I put a ruffle made from the skirt around the edge, with the beaded flower embellishments.

(not the bride)

The quilt was heavily quilted in a pretty feather design, with beaded flowers in the corners and center.

Purple and White Wedding Dress Quilt

This wedding dress was a beautiful white satin dress, with a purple border around the bodice and down the train.  It was perfect for a wedding dress quilt!   The center design was from the bottom of the front of the dress, with appliques in the top corners.

Feather quilting was perfect for the quilt, the designs on the dress made perfect "stems" for the feathers.

Hope the bride enjoys it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Wedding Dress Quilt Finished!

The Donna Miller Wedding Dress Quilt is finished. It was such fun to make, and I love the way it turned out.

After de-constructing the dress and designing the quilt, I drew out the quilting pattern for the large center panel, using the mirror technique I blogged about here.

Then I sewed the top without the outer ruffle, and loaded it on my frame.  I machine quilted the pattern in white, off-white, tan/gold, light pink, and dusty pink threads.  Lots of "scribbling" made the feathers really stand out.  After quilting, I attached the ruffle and binding (on the back).

These quilts are never the same, it's so interesting to see the dresses, and make this special quilt for the bride! These next pictures show more of the detail and quilting

Working on a Wedding Dress Quilt

I love making wedding dress quilts!  They aren't the easiest quilts I've ever made, but the end result is SO pretty.

Here's just a sneak peak of the latest wedding dress quilt I've been working on for Donna.  She didn't want just a white quilt, and requested dusty pink on it also.  It was a beautiful ruffled dress, so I had lots of lace ruffles to work with!

When I finish it, I'll post pictures of the entire quilt.  Stay tuned!

Double Wedding Ring Quilt

I just realized I never finished my blog posts about the double wedding ring bed runner I was making.  I did finish it, and think that the machine quilted feathers really set off the design well.

The original posts were New Way to Paper Piece and Update on Double Wedding Ring Quilt

Even with paper piecing, this was not an easy quilt to make, but I enjoyed making it, and the finished quilt was worth all the effort.

This bed runner was a hostess gift for my aunt and uncle, I hope they enjoy it.  And I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Wedding Dress Quilt to Match Pillows

In another post, Wedding Dress Quilt and Two Pillows, I talked about the wedding dress pillows I made -- now I can show you the finished quilt!!

The quilt was a patchwork design with a center block.  The dress bodice had a beautiful decorative design that I removed and appliqued in the center (wedding dress quilts require knowledge of  garment construction as well as quilting!)  I used the lace and the lining from the dress in the quilt top.

The quilt was quilted in a feather pattern.  It is 54" square, with a 6" ruffled border.

The quilt was to be a gift for Debbie's new granddaughter, so pink bows, ribbons and rosebuds were attached.  The quilt is to be decorative, rather than practical, it will hang on a wall, so there was no problem with the decorations not being "baby proof".

This commission has been such fun, I hope Debbie enjoys the quilt and pillows, I really enjoyed making them.

Wedding Dress Quilt and Two Pillows

Wedding dress quilts are one of my specialties, and I really enjoy making them.  The dresses are so beautiful, and the quilts and pillows are such a great reminder of a wonderful day.

My latest commission was for a quilt and two pillows for Debbie in Ohio.  As you can see in the wedding picture, her wedding dress was lace, and had a lot of ruffles and a beautiful decoration on the bodice.

I used the ruffles as borders, and covered the pillows with lace. -- each pillow was different, and was 12" x 16" plus a 6" ruffle.

In addition to decorative quilting, the first pillow was embellished with pearls, lace and ribbons.

The lace on the second pillow had sequins scattered in the lace, and a decorative lace border that I was able to use on the pillow.

I'll write another blog post about the quilt, as soon as I get it finished!
