Three Generation Wedding Dress Wall Hangings for Meg

Meg wanted two quilted wall hangings made from her dress, her mother's dress, and her grandmother's dress.  Her dress had a full satin skirt, which we used for both quilt tops. Her grandmother loved roses, so the quilted feather design in the outer borders included roses. She also wanted a celtic design, so a triple celtic heart was embroidered in the center of both quilts.

Meg's dress had a lace jacket. The center of her quilt was made from the bodice of the jacket. The pearl heart in the center was made from her headpiece, and the bow at the bottom was from the back of her dress. The lace in the corners of the quilt was from her mother's dress.  Buttons from her grandmother's dress were sewn into the center of the roses in the outer border of the quilt.

The second quilt was for Meg's mother.  In the center was the delicate beading from her grandmother's dress, and lace from Meg's veil.  The lace in the corners of the center panels was from mother's dress.

What a nice way to remember three generations!

Wedding Dress Quilt for Lisette

Lisette asked for a quilted wall hanging made from the fabric in her dress, and the fabric from her bridesmaid's dress. Her wedding colors were purple and sage green.

This design shows off the purple fabric, and the feather quilting, and one of the borders was quilted in purple, with a green background quilting.

Wedding Dress Quilt for Dorothy

Dorothy's wedding dress had beautiful lace on the yoke, sleeves and around the bottom of the dress. which I was able to incorporate into the quilt design.  She also asked me to use the headpiece she wore in her wedding.

The quilting design in the quilt is more free form, with a background on the border of straight lines 1/2 inch apart.

Wedding Dress Quilt for Baby

This Wedding Dress / Baby Quilt was a little different from my usual, and very interesting to make.  The bride wanted a tessellating pattern of printed fabrics, with a flock of bright colored birds flying across the quilt, she plans to hang it in her new baby's room.

I used about 10 blue patterned fabrics, the appliqued bird colors contrasted nicely with the blues. The border was made from the wedding dress.  I quilted a large feather shape to fill each blue block, and a free form feather pattern for the border.

The end result was a really fun quilted wall hanging.

This detail picture shows the quilted design on the blue fabrics, and the birds. The more modern quilting style lets me be really creative, and break a few rules :) Normally I wouldn't use printed fabric in a wedding quilt, but it worked!

Beach Scene Housewarming Gift

My daughter has bought her first home, and I wanted to make her a house warming gift. She enjoys visiting and going to the beach in North Carolina, and so I made this wall hanging for her...

I based the design on an adaptation of Karen Eckmeier's technique that I saw on an episode of The Quilt Show, and some pictures I saw online.

I layered the fabrics and cut each seam, then sewed the pieces together rather than top stitch them as Karen does (that worked better for me).  Then I quilted, added embroidery embellishments, fabric painted more blue in the sky and some pelicans, and added the shells.

I loved the wall hanging so much, I made another one for me!  It's a little larger, but was done in the same way.  I also took some yarn apart and used it for "foam" at the edge of the waves.

The wall hangings went pretty fast, but I have realized I'm not a "random" person, I agonized over which fabrics to use and where to put them!

I'm thinking about doing another one with a night sky and moon.

I finished SUCH a fun wall hanging!  Can you tell what it is?

Here's a hint -- think pixelated!  Ok, so take a look at the next picture -- do you see it now?
