Wedding Dress Made into Two Quilts for April

April sent me a beautiful satin wedding dress with a full skirt and train and beautiful lace bodice and sleeves.  She asked me to make two wedding dress quilts for her son and daughter.  Each quilt was to be different, and she wanted me to incorporate Celtic designs and silver and gold thread.

Her daughter's quilt had a lace heart made from the sleeves in the center.  The lace on the bottom edge of the dress was used in the diamond shape in the center.  A Celtic design was quilted in silver thread in the inner border, accented with lace.  The outer border was quilted in a feather design, and a bow from her dress was added at the bottom.

The quilt for April's son was machine embroidered in gold in a Celtic cross in the center, with Celtic knots in the corners.  Lace from the bottom edge of the dress was put into the inner border, and the outer border was quilted in a feather design with the bow on the bottom.

She and I were both very happy with the results!

Wedding dress quilt for Sandy

Sandy sent me her husband's tie along with her dress for a wedding dress quilt.  Her dress had a net overskirt, with an underskirt covered with embroidery and sequins.  The lining of her dress was a pretty satin.

I embroidered the names and wedding date in a heart in the satin center of the quilt, with a feather design around the embroidery.  Her husband's tie made a narrow green border, then the lace from her underskirt was over satin in the middle border.  The satin outer border had a quilted feather design.

Quilt and Two Pillows for Barrie

Barrie wanted a wedding dress quilt made from her wedding dress and a flowered bridesmaid dress, and wanted some colored thread in the quilting.

Barrie
The wedding dress was used for the center and inner border, with lace from her bodice in part of the center, and lace from her skirt overlaid on the border.  The open areas of the center panel were quilted using a rose colored thread, and their names and the date were embroidered in the center.

The outer border was the bridesmaid dress, quilted around the flowers and leaves.  And the bow from the back of her dress was put on the bottom of the quilt.

For the two pillows, I used the same design, with satin from the dress in the center, quilted in a feather design. Then bridesmaid dress borders and lace from her skirt on the outer part of the pillows.  Bows from her dress were placed in the center of each pillow front.

Meghan's Patchwork Wedding Dress Quilt

Meghan had a beautiful pale pink wedding dress that she wanted made into a quilt. She wanted a patchwork quilt that included:
  • Her husband's tie
  • Sequined fabric and satin sashes from her bridesmaids' dresses
  • Bride and groom's names and wedding date
  • Embroidery of their theme (locks, and tree of life) and a park bench with birds.
  • Buttons from her dress
  • Lace motifs from her dress

She also had beautiful lace around the hem of her wedding dress that we  put on a wide border around the outside of the quilt.

We did a lot of customizing on this quilt, but it turned out well!

Wedding Dress Quilt for Erin

Erin's wedding dress had beautiful embroidery and beading on the chiffon skirt.  At the bottom of the skirt, there were two narrow satin borders. The underskirt was satin, which was used for the quilt top.

In the center, I embroidered the bride and groom's names and wedding date inside a circle made from the beading that was around the neckline of the bodice.  The embroidery was placed in the corners of the center, and a fancy feather design was quilted in the open areas.

The inner border was a feather swirl design.  The narrow satin borders from the bottom of the skirt were put on the outer border, with a quilted design adapted from the embroidery between the borders.

Wedding Dress Quilt for Coti

Coti's beautiful wedding dress was chiffon with a lot of lace, lined with satin.  She wanted a quilt that showed off the beautiful lace.  The satin was used as the top of the quilt, then individual pieces of the lace finished the design, with lots of machine quilting.

In the center, I divided the space.  The bride and groom's names and wedding date were embroidered in the center, with a lace design around the embroidery.  I did a diamond shaped feather swirl pattern next, similar to the inner border.  Then a row of lace, and a feather design in the corners.

The lace was in long pieces going down the skirt of the dress.  I put the lace strips in the corners of the outside border, and quilted a background fill rather than my usual feathers.  This made the lace stand out, and be the focal point of the border.  The inner border was a pretty feather swirl design.

Pillow and Quilt for Pam

Pam had a beautiful satin wedding dress with lots of lace, sequins and pearls.  She wanted a pillow and quilt that used a lot of the embellishments.

The bottom of the bodice was used in the center of her quilt, with lace motifs around the center panel, and a fancy feather quilting design. The lace from the bottom of the dress skirt was put around the inner border. The outer border was satin, with a feather pattern. Calla lilies were used in Pam’s wedding, so they were quilted into the border also.

The bodice was made into a pillow, the bodice front as the front of the pillow and the bodice back as the back of the pillow.

Satin & Lace Wedding Dress Quilt for Mary

Mary's dress had really nice satin fabric, and the lace was beautiful.  She requested a  curved feather design in the outer border.  I used the lace going down the train on the back of her dress in the inner border. The bodice and skirt lace was made into a heart shape in the center.  Their names and wedding date were embroidered in the center.  Around the heart I quilted a feather design.

Crystal's 3 Generation Anniversary Quilt

Crystal sent me her wedding dress, the dress her mother wore in her wedding, and some clothes from her grandmother.  The goal was to incorporate all into a quilt for her parent's anniversary, and I think we did it!

The top of her quilt was made from satin, and the lace from her dress was put around the outer border, and incorporated into the quilting design.  Twenty pieces of lace from her mother's blue dress were combined to make the design in the center of her quilt.  Her parents names and wedding date were embroidered in the center.

Crystal's grandmother liked butterflies, so I embroidered the fabric from her clothes, and cut out butterfly appliques and attached them to the quilt by their bodies, so the wings are three dimensional.

This quilt was a challenge, but I really love the way it turned out.

Three Generation Wedding Dress Wall Hangings for Meg

Meg wanted two quilted wall hangings made from her dress, her mother's dress, and her grandmother's dress.  Her dress had a full satin skirt, which we used for both quilt tops. Her grandmother loved roses, so the quilted feather design in the outer borders included roses. She also wanted a celtic design, so a triple celtic heart was embroidered in the center of both quilts.

Meg's dress had a lace jacket. The center of her quilt was made from the bodice of the jacket. The pearl heart in the center was made from her headpiece, and the bow at the bottom was from the back of her dress. The lace in the corners of the quilt was from her mother's dress.  Buttons from her grandmother's dress were sewn into the center of the roses in the outer border of the quilt.

The second quilt was for Meg's mother.  In the center was the delicate beading from her grandmother's dress, and lace from Meg's veil.  The lace in the corners of the center panels was from mother's dress.

What a nice way to remember three generations!

Quilt and Pillow for Paulette

Paulette wanted a quilt for her daughter, who is getting married this summer and a pillow for herself. What a great idea, a pillow so she could still have a remembrance of her wedding, once she gave the quilt to her daughter!

The dress was made of a nice taffeta fabric with a beautiful embellished bodice, and trim and lace around the hem.

The center of the quilt is a circle made from the l trim on the dress, with embroidered names and date in the center, and feather quilting.  The inner border is fabric with a lace overlay, quilted in the design of the lace.  The outer border is the dress fabric with a nice quilted feather design.

Paulette wanted me to incorporate the lace and buttons from the dress in the pillow.  For the front, I deconstructed the bodice and put it as an overlay on the pillow, with buttons down the sides.  The back of the pillow is lace pieced into a frame for their names and wedding date.

Wedding Dress Pillows for Judi

Judi's wedding dress had a lot of beautiful lace.  She asked me to make two pillows that showed off the lace.  The pillows are the same design, with the front a quilted heart with lace from the bodice of the dress in the center.  The back of the pillows is a lace "frame" and edging, with the bride and groom's names and wedding date machine embroidered on the back.

Not a Wedding Dress Quilt - This One's For Me!

It's been a white since I've made a quilt that wasn't a Wedding Dress Quilt.  Now that I have an embroidery machine, I wanted to combine embroidery and machine quilting in a quilt.  I am so happy with the result.  The off white blocks are satin, and I used several different quilting designs in the blocks.

So glad I get to keep this one!

Wedding Dress Quilt for Lisa

Lisa asked for a wedding dress quilt that also used the colors  in her son and daughter-in-law's wedding. Using a nice cotton fabric for the quilt made it more practical, rather than just being decorative.

In the center of the quilt I created a pretty feather design for the machine quilting.  The lace from her dress show up beautifully over the navy fabric, and the red was a nice contrast.  I embroidered the bride and groom's names and the date in the center.  Mom and Dad's names and their wedding date were put on the decorative label on the back of the quilt.

Two Wedding Dress Quilts for Glenda

Glenda had a beautiful heavy satin wedding dress, with a woven border and lace embellishments.  She wanted a quilt for each of her children, and we worked together to create two very different quilts!

For her daughter, I placed the border of the dress and train at the top and bottom of the quilt, and added machine embroidered butterflies in the daughter's wedding colors, hunter green and coral.  I quilted in an allover feather design.  The finished quilt is 50" x 60".

For her son, I made a very different quilt.  As you can see in the picture, it's a banner, with embroidered lamb, lion and crown.  The animals and crown were machine embroidered, and the banner was then appliqued onto the quilt. The ribbon at the bottom with "Thy Will Be Done" was also appliqued. Then the quilt was machine quilted in a feather design.  The banner is "hanging" from the satin flower that was on the back of Glenda's wedding dress.
