Wedding Quilt Designed from Wedding Invitation

A lovely lady in Canada, Megan Seiler,  asked me to make a wedding quilt for her friends, using their wedding invitation design in the quilt.  This was a great design opportunity, and was a lot of fun!

Using the EQ5 software, I designed the quilt, then printed it out and got out the pencil!!  Lots of hearts and feathers, and the bride and groom's names and the wedding date.

After customer approval, I got started.  The central panel was painted with acrylic paints mixed with textile medium.  Then I thread painted over those areas.

The rest of the top was sewn together, loaded onto my frame, and I started quilting!  I used coordinating thread for each section.

Most of the quilting was some form of hearts and feathers, but the grey borders were done in a spiral fill, with some pebbles in the outer border.  I felt this changed up the design from just feathers, and made it a little more contemporary/modern..

The blue borders were a design similar to the motif in the center panel, and in the outer blue border, I painted and thread painted again.

Did you notice that there are more borders than there were in my original design?  I realized as I started making the quilt that the center panel was too big, and I made it smaller and added a couple of borders.  I like it much better now, it seems more in proportion.  The finished quilt is 83 x 93 - queen sized. Because it was a large quilt, it was hard to get a good picture of the entire quilt hanging straight!  Here's one that was only cropped a little :)

Wedding Dress Quilt to Match Pillows

In another post, Wedding Dress Quilt and Two Pillows, I talked about the wedding dress pillows I made -- now I can show you the finished quilt!!

The quilt was a patchwork design with a center block.  The dress bodice had a beautiful decorative design that I removed and appliqued in the center (wedding dress quilts require knowledge of  garment construction as well as quilting!)  I used the lace and the lining from the dress in the quilt top.

The quilt was quilted in a feather pattern.  It is 54" square, with a 6" ruffled border.

The quilt was to be a gift for Debbie's new granddaughter, so pink bows, ribbons and rosebuds were attached.  The quilt is to be decorative, rather than practical, it will hang on a wall, so there was no problem with the decorations not being "baby proof".

This commission has been such fun, I hope Debbie enjoys the quilt and pillows, I really enjoyed making them.

Do you or anyone you know have a wedding dress packed away in a closet? A wedding dress quilt is a great way to display your dress!

On to my next order, a wedding quilt adapted from the wedding invitation design. Stay tuned!

Wedding Dress Quilt and Two Pillows

Wedding dress quilts are one of my specialties, and I really enjoy making them.  The dresses are so beautiful, and the quilts and pillows are such a great reminder of a wonderful day.

My latest commission was for a quilt and two pillows for Debbie in Ohio.  As you can see in the wedding picture, her wedding dress was lace, and had a lot of ruffles and a beautiful decoration on the bodice.

I used the ruffles as borders, and covered the pillows with lace. -- each pillow was different, and was 12" x 16" plus a 6" ruffle.

In addition to decorative quilting, the first pillow was embellished with pearls, lace and ribbons.

The lace on the second pillow had sequins scattered in the lace, and a decorative lace border that I was able to use on the pillow.

I'll write another blog post about the quilt, as soon as I get it finished!

Here's a hint -- think pixelated!  Ok, so take a look at the next picture -- do you see it now?

Beautiful Moda Fabric from the Fat Quarter Shop

I just received a layer cake from the Fat Quarter Shop of beautiful Esprit de Noel by French General for Moda Fabrics (whew, what a mouthful!). But aren't they pretty? The red, green and tan colors go perfectly in my living room. and I love all the designs!  I'm envisioning a winter/holiday lap quilt.

I've never worked with a layer cake before, I usually buy my yardage by the yard, so this will be a new thing for me. Forty-two 10" squares, in 35 fabrics is much more exciting than just one piece of yardage!

Do you use layer cakes, or other pre-cuts?

The Moda Bake Shop had a free pattern, The Dark Side...or Not Layer Cake Quilte Noel  that I adapted for my quilt. I used fewer blocks and the quilt design will be off center.  Here's a picture of my first layout on the design wall.

I'll keep posting as the quilt progresses!
